PROBLEMS
Too many management devices in one bus
With the development of technology and passenger demand, more and more buses are required to install many types of equipment, such as media, wifi, safety video, fleet management, etc. Drivers usually spend lots of time figuring out how these devices work.
How can drivers operate these devices?
According to research, 82% of bus drivers can’t remember everything at once. 40% of bus drivers say the complexity of the operation makes them irritable and often face problems such as maintenance and testing.
The Challenge
The challenge was to design brand image, User Experience flow and improve user engagement on the mobile application. It has:
AIMS
-
Increased the conversion rate and generate business plans.
-
Improved user engagement and retention rate.
-
Reduced the operation costs
Outcome
After publishing to the public, the number of bus operators increased by 120% within a year.
90% of bus operators appreciated that we helped them reduce the management cost during the past year.
90% of bus operators found it helpful
Prototyped this concept with ten bus operators, and 80% of them were able to focus on essential tasks and reduce the overhead cost of human resources. Only a few staffs manage the backend system.
Endorsed by stakeholders at bus operators
Pitched this idea to over ten bus operator stakeholders, willing to provide data to us and help them improve more functions case by case.
DESIGN OVERVIEW
UBT One back-end system provides a wifi-based hardware management platform that allows bus companies to uniformly manage WiFi, media, entertainment, and fleet management.

Who are the users?
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Define problems of existing solutions
The following three companies are competitive back-end management platforms. However, their functions are relatively simple, which can only provide onboard WiFi or onboard WiFi + safety video. There are no more choices.

INTERVIEW & QUESTIONNAIRE
Interview & Observation
I collaborated with the researchers in the team to understand our core users, their environment, and significant tasks to accomplish. We conducted five interviews with different bus operators and gathered data on their current workflow and significant challenges. This data helped us in finding opportunities to solve the problems.
"
To be a great designer, you need to look a little deeper into how people think & act.

Faced with some tough problems, we often have to contact different companies. When there is a problem with wifi, we need to contact the technical staff of T-mobile to help us check. Fleet management needed to find people associated with their company.
No company can provide almost all the services we want.

RESEARCH INSIGHTS
Struggling moments of managing different platform
PROBLEM SPACE
Issues Found
1. Bus Operators do not have centralized data systems
2. Bus Operators have different data needs and purposes
3. Bus Operators are looking for a new method of data collection
PERSONA
JOURNEY MAP
Identify the user case
INTERACTION MAP
Mapping and Organizing Information
Designing for the user experience began by sketching out a typical user journey based on accomplishing specific tasks within the app. Once the user journey had been established, the team began to unpack the design flow for general and specific use cases.
WIREFRAMING
Low-Fidelity Prototyping
Based on our platform’s main features and task flow, we created initial sketches & wireframes of our prototype with the following user flows Dashboard, Configure, Onboard infotainment, Tracker, Safety+ & Report. We used Figma as the tool for the Low-Fidelity prototyping of the app.
FINAL SOLUTION PROTOTYPE
REFLECTION
Create a focused minimum viable product
We are a relatively small team without much industry experience in this project. Our team needs to narrow down the target audience and focus on the problem we are capable of solving. Our stakeholders came with ambiguous project scope, and we had to focus on being agile, working in small increments, and aiming to move fast. Although we discovered additional problems through stakeholder conversations, we reconsidered the overall impact on all issues and tried to define an effective solution.
